Fall on the Chowan River
This past weekend I went on what's become our semi-annual trip to the Chowan River. I had just a couple of days to get my boat ready beforehand, but I accomplished most of what I had in mind to do. The weekend was absolutely beautiful, low seventies, low humidity, full sun. The fishing however, was difficult. Where we usually catch nice bass, all we found were pike and bowfin. A few nice crappie were found on some brushpiles and we caught catfish on my new noodle rigs. That might have been the highlight of the trip, I made my own rigs and I had tested them until I had the right length of noodle to rebar ratio, so that when a catfish hit the bait the noodle popped up and stayed up until we hauled in the fish or rebaited the hook. I spent more time learning to read my Humminbird Helix 9 and I'm mastering use of my Ipilot trolling motor, which is almost like having a guide drive the boat for you while you fish. On shore, we had some awesome cornhole games, we smoked a couple of pork butts, just good times as always.
